The residential community of Rancho San Rafael is found in the San Rafael Hills to the east of Glendale Freeway (2) and above Glendale Community College, whereas the San Rafael Hills neighborhood is entered from North Verdugo Road and north of Glendale College. Both neighborhoods share the western slopes of the San Rafael Hills in Glendale, however San Rafael Hills is mostly a City of Glendale parks and recreation neighborhood with very little residential housing.

Rancho San Rafael

This neighborhood is named after the major Glendale development that was subdivided and constructed here in the late 1980’s and first half of the 1990’s. The Rancho San Rafael community is a homogeneous master planned development with over 500 Mediterranean style single family homes, paired homes and townhomes all located within the chaparral canyon slopes of the San Rafael Hills. Many of the homes overlook and have nice views of Chevy Chase Canyon and the Chevy Chase neighborhood that is adjacent to the east. Ingress and egress to this neighborhood is though the Camino San Rafael road, which is accessed right off the Glendale (2) Freeway and winds through the steep slopes from the College Hills neighborhood to the Emerald Isle neighborhood.

San Rafael Hills

San Rafael Hills is more of a mountainous area of Glendale than it is a “neighborhood”. Located to the northeast of the Rancho San Rafael neighborhood and jumping over a small pocket of homes in the most easterly part of the Verdugo Woodlands neighborhood, is a Glendale mapped neighborhood consisting mostly of chaparral mountain terrain and the Glendale Sports Complex.

The main attraction in San Rafael Hills is the Glendale Sports Complex. The location of this Glendale park is beautiful and an ideal setting for recreation, with hiking and mountain running trails (Catalina Verdugo Trail) and dirt motorways (fire roads) all connecting to the park. Located within this luxurious park are two artificial turf soccer fields, a state-of-the-art artificial turf baseball field, two grass softball fields, a concession stand and meeting room.
